TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Services have been set for the Airman, a Topeka native, who died on Tuesday after a military vehicle accident near Salina.

The Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home says Staff Sergeant Welsey “Wes” W. Kubie, 30, of Salina, formerly of Topeka, died on Tuesday, June 8, in McPherson from the injuries he sustained when a military vehicle he was in overturned at the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range. It said he was born on Dec. 8, 1990, in Merriam to Bruce and Diana (Roberts) Kubie.

According to the funeral home, Staff Sgt. Kubie was an Active Guard Reservist in the US Air Force and had been deployed to Afghanistan from 2019 to 2020. It said he served as a JTAC-Instructor.

“Today we lost a member of our family under unfortunate circumstances,” said Col. Jason Knobbe, commander, 184th Wing. “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow Guardsmen. We will continue caring for the injured Airmen and provide assistance to their loved ones. Their health, safety and well-being is our top priority.”

The funeral home said Kubie was a Shawnee Heights graduate and enjoyed fishing and golfing. He is survived by his wife, Abby Walker, and their three children.

According to the funeral home, Kubie will lie in state on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. and funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 17, at 10 a.m. He will be buried with full military honors.

Instead of flowers, the funeral home said memorial donations can be made to Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka. The funds will be used for his children.
