TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Tropics announced in August that the team would not return to the Capital City, however, that has now changed.

Team ownership announced at a news conference at the Stormont Vail Event Center Wednesday afternoon that the Indoor Professional Football team will return for the 2023 through 2025 seasons. The team said staying two more years was also due to a partnership with Shawnee County.

The team will be a part of the Champions Indoor Football League and the season will last through March until June while the Tropics will have six home games on their schedule.

Something new they’ll have is a family fun zone and they plan on building a “beach” in the eastern part of the end zone.

General Manager and Topeka West head football coach Russell Norton is thrilled to have the team back for the foreseeable future.

“As the General Manager, I am excited that the Tropics will be staying in Topeka. With our new ownership being pillars in our community, it made my decision easy to stay on board as the GM. We look forward to the continued growth of our brand and enhancing the fan experience,” Norton said.

Norton says he took over in late January and he wanted to make the experience fun for all fans.

”I made sure people felt like they were a person and just a ticket,” Norton said. “We’ll handle all of the X’s and O’s and things behind the scenes but I think the biggest thing for Topeka to realize is, man this is a locally owned team now, there are men who are pillars in our community that want this thing to successful.”

One of the three owners, Trevor Burdett says this was an easy choice to bring back the Tropics.

”Topeka really doesn’t have anything going on during that season, there is no sports,” Burdett says. “It’s after March Madness so KU is done playing and I think the opportunity with promotions we can do and the entertain value we’ll bring to it, I think it was just a no-brainer.”

The Tropics also have a new website to check out promotions and merchandise.
